Murdered restaurateur Karl Jaensch tried to ward off gunshots:
2014-05-24 journalist Maygene de Wee -- RAPPORT weekly Afrikaans newspaper. "Karl Jaensch, the murdered restaurateur of the Noisy Oyster in Paternoster had moved there 'for a quieter life'.
On Thursday night May 22 2014 his wife Debbie found her murdered husband when she returned from her night-shift at the restaurant at around 21h30.
The 41-year-old Jaentsch was shot dead. Rapport 'reliably informed' that a .22 spent bullet casing was found at the scene.
Jaentsch was the former manager of the Brass Bell restaurant at alk Bay, located inside the ocean-side railway station.
The SAPS arrested two 'suspects' but released them after questioning. One of them, Merlin Jordaan (28),
said he and his nephew Russel Jordaan 'just happened to be at the smallholding to fetch a skiff. We have nothing to do with Karl's murder.
He was
a good man. He was always kind to the people of Paternoster.'
The SAPS spent hours examining the crime scene on Friday. They refused to provide information as to their findings thus far.
They did however say that judging from the signs at the scene, Jaentsch very likely was attacked while he was smoking a cigarette on the porch.
He 'very likely had a chance to flee into the house and lock the door', said colonel John Rooi who runs the Vredenburg police station.
"The plants around the stoep (the porch) were trampled,' he said.
A bullet had also penetrated the glassdoor at the living room. Jaensch had two gunshot wounds to his chest and one in his hand.
The police believe he was trying to fend off the shots.
Rapport quotes an unnamed source as saying that 'a man who usually washes the restaurant linnen" had spoken to Jaentsch n his cellphone at around 18h30, three hours before wife Debbie found her murdered husband after returning from her night-shift at the restaurant. The widow, Debbie, would not speak to the news media.

Afrikaans report by Joanie Bergh May 23 2014: Karl Jaentsch (41), owner of the popular restaurant Noisy Oyster at Paternoster, was found dead with gunshot wounds on 22 May in his living room. Wife Debbie retuned from work at around 21h40 and found her murdered husband. He had to bullet wounds in his chest. Only his cellphone was 'robbed'. Nothing else of value inside their homestead was stolen. .
