Survive mob attack: Toelie 48 and Adele Bouwer, 45 and employee: stabbed by large mob at Rustenburg dump site
One of the stab wounds sustained by Toelie Bouwer (at a Rustenburg dumping site), was more than 10cm deep and missed his lung by mere millimetres.
Rustenburg – March 28 2014 - When Toelie Bouwer 48 and wife Adele, 45, and an employee went to dump rubble on Thursday afternoon, 20 March 2014, they never expected to have to flee for their lives.
At about 14:00 that afternoon, the Bouwer couple and an employee arrived at the Waste Management Centre in Bethlehem Street, just to be informed that the site was full. They were given a note and directed to the Rustenburg Dumping Site near the prison (close to Sunrise Park).
On arrival, the employee started clearing rubble off the back of the bakkie, when he was suddenly surrounded and attacked by a group of about thirty, filthy men in rags. Toelie Bouwer immediately jumped out of the vehicle and went to his employee’s rescue, where he himself was overcome within seconds and stabbed in the shoulder.
His attackers also aimed for his stomach, but he was able to fight them off and managed to get back into the vehicle.
He was robbed of his jewellery and shoes during the attack, and while attempting to get back into the bakkie, his attackers still tried to pull him out. In an interview with the Platinum Weekly, Adele Bouwer described her horror as she watched her husband being stabbed repeatedly, saying, “I witnessed the knives penetrating his body! Just like a nightmare!”
Adele knew she had to get them all to safety and raced away. She says the attackers acted like they were out to kill, and there was no stopping them. Since there is no municipal supervision, the dumping site is a danger zone where innocent residents are at the mercy of brutal criminals.
The Bouwers are planning to lay charges against the municipality, as this affront should not be allowed to continue. Toelie Bouwer was told by his doctor that one 10cm deep stab wound barely missed a lung and that he is lucky to have escaped with his life. The Bouwer’s employee fortunately also sustained only minor injuries.
