Martie Erasmus 'begged her husband's killers to let her cover grandson's eyes so he would not see them shoot dead his granddad...'
Groot Marico North West farmer Koos Erasmus, 59, shot dead in farm attack on lion-reserve. - Mrs Erasmus also was injured: hacked across the skull with a panga (machete). One of the three black gunmen shot dead Koos Erasmus in front of their four-year-old grandson who slept in their room.
"I woke up with a hand across my mouth,' said the traumatised widow after the excessively violent attack by the black male gang on their nature reserve.
She is recovering at a friend's house, nursing the head-wounds.
She said it was dark but she heard her husband struggling with the attackers.
I also fought back and they kept hitting me. Then I heard my husband shout 'Martie'.
And a shot was fired. I begged the gunmen: please do not hurt my grandchild I will do anything'. She begged them to let her cover the four-your-old boy's eyes but they refused.
She said the gang clearly had knowledge of the gun-safes in their home -- a large one for weapons and a smaller one.
They demanded the keys but she didn't know where these were.
"They cursed me and shouted at me and tied me up with torn bedsheets'.
The gang fled with R260,000 in cash and a 9mnm pistol from the smaller safe, using the farm's bakkie to flee it: they abandoned it 2km outside the homestead.
She rushed to her husband after they left and found him with his head covered up by clothing.
"He did not respond and I realized he wasn't breathing'. She called for help over the neighbourhood watch radio.
local DA councillor Cornel Dreyer said it's the third murder within four months in this small area.
However the poorly informed local manager of the Groot Marica tourism office Santa van Bart claimed that the gruesome murder was 'an isolated incident.'
Dreyer said the senseless violence and the murder of the Afrikaner farmer polarises the community and increases racial hatred against the people who did this.
Neighbour Linda van den Berg said she was very upset. The farm across theirs has already been broken into four times, she said.
The manager of the Wag'nBietjie kroeg in Groot Marico said the community is shocked - he noted that
this was the first such incident so close to the village - most of the other attacks were closer to the Zeerust village.
"People are shocked that it's so close but we don't have much crime in the village itself - in fact people still
sleep with their doors open'. At the time of going to press the newspaper reported that no-one had been arrested.
