Giel Louwrens, 80, murdered at 8am March 19 2014 at backdoor when putting out the garbage:
Reported by Krugersdorp News journalist Amoryn Golden - Amoryn Golden 19 March 2014 13:45 -- "In the third attack against the elderly Louwrens couple (Giel, 80, and Siena, 73) in the past year, Giel Louwrens was stabbed to death at his back door on Wednesday-morning March 19 2014 at 8am. He had unlocked the door to put out the trash when a knifeman stormed into the kitchen and stabbed him to death. (*It's not known if anything was robbed. The journalist describes the murder as a 'robbery'.)
of his Lewisham, Krugersdorp home where they have lived for the past fifty years.
Granddaughter Yolandi Grenfell said the couple have been targeted by criminals three times this year.
"Tools were robbed from their garage and burglars walked off with furniture while my grandparents were on vacation,' she told journalist Amoryn Golden of the Krugersdorp News.
Just the night before the fatal attack against her granddad, the family had a gathering in which they discussed that the couple must move to a safer home because of the soaring violent crime in their suburb.
DA-councillor Hetta Kruger confirmed that violent crime had soared in the suburb.
One family was held at gunpoint and another resident in the same street was shot to death in December 2013 in his driveway, she said.
"Oom Giel,' as his Afrikaner family and neighbours fondly called the old-age pensioner, was the third crime-victim since December reported to the local SAPS.
Reportedly, 'the community is paralysed with fear'.
"We don't know whose turn will be next; we do not sleep and we are too terrified to leave our homes,'
were remarks from a group of residents who had gathered outside the murder house.
Neigbours said Mr Lourens was a gentle person who would never have harmed a soul.
Family and friends are the mostly deeply hurt and distressed by the fact that
Giel Lourens was totally defenceless: a frail and elderly man. "The 'thieves' could just have taken whatever they wanted and just leave. It's truly sickening to think they were there with the mission to murder a defenceless old man," said his granddaughter.
Seated in the living room - right next to the kitch which only hours before had been a murder scene, the granddaughter
described the details leading to her grandfather's murder.
"He unlocked the backdoor to empty out the trash and he was attacked at once by the knifeman, who was very likely waiting for him." "My granddad was calling for help while the attacker stabbed him three times - killing him at the scene'.
