He shouted at them and one of the men pointed a firearm at Yates. Yates said he acted quickly and shot dead the gunman. The other man fled. Yates immediately phoned the police and they arrived 10 minutes later. Yates said the suspects broke a window to get to his wife's keys which were on the kitchen table. He said they might have used a pole to get to the keys, because the table on which the keys were was far away from the window.
He showed The Express a pole on the lawn which was not there the previous day. He could not see any other sign of forced entry around the house.Yates, who is a member of Modderfontein Shooting Club, said he did not like killing someone but he had to protect his wife and home.
According to him someone broke into a factory up the street the previous night. He said the two incidents could be related.According to Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesman for Kempton Park SAPS, the police have "not yet" laid any charges against Yates as the investigation is ongoing. According to Mtshali the other attacker is still at large.
