April 30 2015 - George Herald report: Christopher, the husband of murdered teacher Jayde Panayiotou was arrested together with two black suspects, police confirmed to the George Herald. The husband has not yet pleaded to any charges in front of a magistrate. It's not known why the police to break the sub-judice rule against publication of the suspect's name, which is against the South African Constitutional rights ruling human rights of arrested individuals. The murdered teacher's body was discovered near the KwaNobuhle Township in Uitenhage a day after she was kidnapped from in front of her home. Ms Panyiotou was kidnapped Tuesdaymorning from in front of her home on Deacon Road just behind Makro in Kabegapark. A woman in the street told police she saw three'suspicious men' hang around at the same time. Her sister Toni Inggs said Jayde waited there every morning for her ride to Uitenhage. Shortly before 06h30 Jayde still spoke to a fellow-teacher on her cellphone yet just minutes later when the car drew up she was not there. One of the members of the carshare-club phoned Jayde's husband Christopher, asking him where she was and he said she must still be standing outside, waiting. However her cellphone was turned off and no further contact could be made with her. Shortly thereafter R1,700 cash was withdrawn from her account from a cashpoint in KwaNobuhle, said w/o Alwin Labans. Her kidnapping spread like wildfire on social media and the alert was shared more than 1,000 times on Facebook - but by noon there still was no sign of her and police officers investigated further at the KwaNobuhle cashpoint, a small Nedbank in crowded Matanzima Street. The police confiscated the bank's photographs of customers who withdrew cash and it showed the face of the man who got money from the teacher's account. The police searched all afternoon without any luck. However a woman from Deacon Road did tell the police that they saw three 'suspicious men' in the street that morning. By late afternoon the sister, Ms Inggs, felt very discouraged and said no new leads were found and her phone is still off. Head mistress Marilyn Woods said Jayde's disappearing is hartbreaking. They shared the news during the last class-period with the senior pupils. "Most got tears in their eyes when I asked them to pray for her safe return". Cape Town - Details of how an unregistered sim card led police to a granny-killer, which emerged in a recent Western Cape High Court judgment, have demonstrated that criminals can’t escape the clutches of a determined detective, even if they use unregistered sim cards containing no Rica information. In the case, limited data on a sim card used in a device stolen from a murder scene was the police’s first clue. The data led them to two people in Gugulethu, who led them to the accused. At the accused’s home, police found a DVD player, the training shoes he wore when he committed the crime, and grains of sand. The judgment was handed down in an appeal which Thulani Mtoto lodged against his conviction and sentence. Last year, the Parow Regional Court found Mtoto guilty of charges of housebreaking and murder for strangling 70-year-old Goodwood grandmother, Hester Roberts. He was sentenced to an effective 25 years in jail. Roberts was strangled in August 2010. The front door of the house and a window were open. Roberts’s cellphone and DVD player were missing. Police also noticed shoe prints in a flowerbed. Service provider Vodacom found that two sim cards were used in her handset. One belonged to Roberts and the second an unknown number, which did not have any Rica information stored on it. The sim card was in regular communication with a number belonging to Mtoto’s cousin’s girlfriend. But the girlfriend and cousin told police that Mtoto had taken her cellphone, and took the detectives to his shack, where they found a DVD player similar to the one stolen from Roberts’s house. They also took possession of his Adidas training shoes and grains of sand, which experts linked to Roberts’s flower bed. The accused claimed he bought the cellphone and DVD player from unknown people at Nyanga Junction, and that he later sold the cellphone. In her judgment Judge Nolwazi Boqwana said Mtoto’s version of how he came to be in possession of the cellphone and DVD player was “less than convincing”. She said he changed his version when cornered, and that this showed he was untruthful. Judge Boqwana also referred to evidence that the footwear analyst could not conclude with 100 percent certainty that the prints matched the soles of Mtoto’s shoes. However, she added: “It is important to note that the footprint, or shoeprint evidence was not the only evidence against the appellant.” She said her own observations were that the resemblance of the characteristics in the shoeprints was “extraordinary”. “In particular, a star-like characteristic (an Adidas emblem) and wear and tear on the training shoes on both prints are observed.” The evidence about the sand grains also completed the picture, she said. “ I am satisfied that the magistrate was correct in coming to the conclusion that (Mtoto) broke into the deceased’s house, murdered her and robbed her of her belongings.” Judge Boqwana also rejected the appeal against the sentence. “In my view the magistrate showed a measure of mercy by imposing a lesser sentence, taking into account that the deceased was killed in a cruel manner, in the privacy of her home and robbed of her belongings,” she said. April 30 2015 reported by By Sandi Kwon Hoo -- Kimberley - An 82-year-old man was hacked to death at his home in Longlands, while his dog was found lying dead next to his body during the early hours of on Wednesday morning. It is believed that the eight-week-old puppy was kicked and stomped to death, while eyewitnesses stated that the deceased’s throat was slit. The deceased, Leonard Sibiya, had been living alone in a lorry bin behind some unused mining dumps for a number of years, following the death of his wife. No one has been arrested for the murder yet. Police spokeswoman, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the deceased’s face was hacked with an unknown sharp instrument. “The man’s body was found lying outside his shanty. According to the police, neighbours found the bloody body slumped at his door at about 7am on Wednesday morning.” A friend of the deceased, Frank Williams, said that he found Sibiya lying with his face on the ground. “I usually brought firewood and water in a 25-litre container for him every day so that he did not need to carry heavy buckets of water from the river. The black male robber of an unarmed 86-year-old Afrikaner resident in Helderview, Somerset-West tried to get cash for her robbed groceries: her white Fiat Uno and R271's worth of groceries were hijacked when the man ripped the old lady from her little car just as she had pulled into the driveway. Her grandson Richard said the cashier at the Pick 'n Pay noticed that the man who then tried to exchange the same groceries at the Pick 'n Pay in Eersterivier for cash, hadn't used Mrs Smuts' Smart Shopper Card and cash receipt to prove the purchase - she noticed that the groceries weren't bought at Eersterivier and the man ran away. The cashier raised the alarm with the police and shortly thereafter the Fiat was pulled over at Macassar near Somerset=West and the thug was arrested. Mrs Smuts' handbag - together with wallets stolen from other people - were found in the hijacked car. Family mourn father of two The family of Clinton Nell praised his life, days after his body was found on Benoni Road, in the Benoni Small Farms The 29-year-old Rynfield resident went missing a day before the discovery of his body, on Thursday, last week. Police have opened an inquest docket and do not suspect foul play was involved. Nell went missing from the Oakfields Shopping Centre on April 29, at around 11.30am. His bakkie was parked at the centre and he was nowhere to be found. A search was undertaken and the matter was reported to the police. The Benoni Community Policing Forum (CPF) and his family searched for Nell until his body was found on the afternoon of April 30. The Nell family, who spoke to the City Times via email, as they were struggling to come to terms with the death, said the husband and father of two will be sorely missed. “Clinton was loving, kind, humorous, caring, considerate, wonderful, a special son and a protective brother,” said his family. “He was a true gentleman, a good, honest person, who always put others first. “He was a wonderful father and an amazing husband. “Clinton will be missed dearly, never forgotten by all who knew him, his loving family, friends and colleagues.” The family thanked the search parties for their efforts, including CPF members Clive Patterson and Brandon Scott, Sean Stopford of Saber Tactical, the SAPS and volunteers who assisted in the search. The family did not have finality on funeral arrangements on Monday.

Video: Merlewood Primary targeted by criminals The school is working to bounce back after being robbed and vandalised SMASHED prefab walls and windows greeted pupils and teachers at Merlewood Primary last week. Seventeen classrooms, a kitchen and an office were broken into and various items taken. Port Shepstone police are investigating a business break-in and are asking the community to come forward with any information. “The school break-in occurred over the weekend,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid. “Various items, including a microwave and stationery were stolen.” In 2012 the Herald reported that structural defects jeopardised the health and safety of pupils and teachers at the school. There are classrooms that are not habitable and many of the prefab classrooms have been damaged by borer infestation. To date there appears to be no significant improvement. Outgoing governing body chairman Mirelle Archibald told the Herald they cannot keep up with the rate at which the buildings are deteriorating. “Two grade 1 classes had to vacate the building as the ceiling were sagging and the floorboards had been broken. “The entire school building requires urgent attention. This is the reason why criminals are gaining entry to the school,” she said. In 2012 the Hibiscus Coast Municipality’s fire and maintenance departments declared parts of the school unsafe. “This is the fourth break-in in a matter of three months,” said principal Audrey Ryan. “In the previous incident, four air conditioning units were removed. We are extremely frustrated because of the impact it has on our children’s education, as well as the budget. “Lots of resource material including teaching material has been stolen and vandalised. The family still have many questions as to why Michael went missing The decomposing body of a missing Benoni teenager was discovered near the dam opposite Lakeside Mall on Sunday. The body of Michael Ross (17) was found after a three-week search for the teen, who went missing on his way to Homestead Dam on April 12. “An officer came to our home at around 10.30pm to inform us that the body of a teen was found wearing clothing which matched what my brother was last seen wearing,” Ian Ross told Benoni City Times. The family were asked to identify the body on Monday and, from what they could tell from the clothing, it was that of Michael. “We also had DNA tests performed and they came out positive,” added Ian. According to the family, the teen had decided to not join them at a family braai at Homestead Dam on April 12. He instead wanted to spend the afternoon with a friend and went missing on his way to give his family the only key they all shared to their Woburn Avenue flat. The family still have many questions as to why Michael went missing and what led to his death.

Middelburg, South Africa She's 1.5meters tall, weighs less than 50km but she fought so fearcely against two burly black male attackers, that police launched an investigation to find out of any males were treated for deep slashes to their faces. The two thugs got between her two-year-old child inside the house - and the mom hanging up the curtains. She said she fought ' for life or dead. The thugs had to duck away for a sugar pot, a kettle and a very heavy table was torned down on his head. She grabbed a glass candelabra weighting about 1,5kg and smashed her attacker full in the face with it. "If I hadn't heard my child crying inside, the police would have opened a murder-dossier. I don't know how I got the strength, but I fought with everything at hand,' she said. She was busy hanging up curtains. Every once in a while she would hear a rustling outside but saw nothing suspicious when she looked through the window. She put her son Leonardo in bed and stayed with him until he fell asleep and then put back the garden-chair she had taken from outside to stand on while she hung up the curtains. She sat on it briefly outside but when she heard the security gate creaking and a dark figure slip into the house, she realised her child was inside and somebody wanted to harm him. She rushed inside and ran full-face into the fist of one of the black home-invaders as she stormed in - while a second one was running down the hall and she heard her child screaming. Her attacker stopped her from coming to her child's rescue and that's when all her anger exploded and she started fighting fiercely to that she could get to her child. "I hurt that guy badly - I could see fat beneath his skin at one of the cuts and the entire time I was thinking: "The Lord protects me. You will not rape me. You will not kill me, I have two children to live for.' The two blacks fled her home and she ran to her child: finding the teddy bear he usually sleeps with, in the hallway. She screamed for help but nobody outside came to her aid - then she ran down the street with her son in her harms towards her parent's home nearby. POLICE WAS OBTUSE "It was very difficult to get the police to understand our street address. First we had to spell it than the woman just threw down the phone but someone heard the radio-call alert and arrived quickly,' she said. The two thubs stole watches and some jewellery she said. Mrs Pienaar got a bruised eye, cuts and bruises and is traumatised after the attack, refusing for instance to take a shower if her husband isn't home 'because then I can't hear what is going on outside'. Still in coma after brick-attack on N2 Alberton: Caden Slabbert and Marionette Schwab Report May 5 2015: Young Caden Slabbert is showing positive signs and might be brought out of his coma today. “Caden is showing positive signs that he may wake up today. He has been slowly taking less ventilation assistance and medication. Signs are stable but he is still asleep,” said Justin, Caden’s father. Caden is one of two people who were hit by bricks on April 30, after a pedestrian on the side of the N12 West threw bricks at cars. The attack took place just before the Glen. Two bricks went through passenger windows and both passengers were severely injured. Caden was one of the two victims of the attack. He was in a medically induced coma after the incident and has been treated in the Clinton Hospital. The second victim, Marionette Schwab, is also being treated for severe injuries to her head. The two victims were in separate cars and are not linked in any other way, other than having the attack in common. Marionette is in a stable condition at this stage, but is still in an induced coma. Both the families were getting ready to start their long weekend when the attack took place. Marionette’s family has thanked the community for their prayers and for keeping her in their thoughts. The RECORD has received multiple wishes and prayers for the recovery of both victims. Not much is known about the attacker, or the reasons behind the attack.
